Outside the town of Piatra Neamt can be found an ancient Jewish cemetery, divided into two sectors, one very old, with crypts from the 19th century and a relatively more modern one, with crypts from after 1900.
It has a well updated register for viewing the graves and is visited by relatives and others wishing to find people who once lived and died in Piatra Neamt. It is closed on Saturday, the day on which community services take place at the synagogue.
In the Roman Jewish cemetery you can find the Monument of the Jewish Heroes from Roman – “Morti Pentru Patrie”.
A high stone wall remains in Sighet, built to defend the numerous members of the Jewish community that existed there before the second world war. In the cemetery can be found the remains of everyone from the highest civic rabbi to the most ordinary citizen. It remains despite the ravages of time and weather. One of the most important monuments here is the “monument of soap”, in memory of those who perished in the nazi camps.
The existence of European Jews in this area has been confirmed since the year 1600 and lasted until 1969 when the last two families took the road to the country of their forebears, Israel. Now, in Stefanesti, the only physical reminder of the presence is the Jewish where the Rabbi Saint Abraham Matitiahu Friedman was buried (70 years 1863-1933), to whom many miracles are attributed and who is venerated at the site.
His remains were transferred to the cemetery in Ghivataim-Tel Aviv. The rabbi’s tomb is a holy place of pilgrimage and it is said that he will help those who leave their prayers there.
Children of Stefanesti, from all corners around the world, remember the great-grandparents, grandmother and parents at rest in the cemetery and your resume in the little town of childhood memories to commemorate, city streets where you may see a Jewish house that might be a connection or a school where can might have learned.
